Woolworths responds to rumours that Coles shopping bags will be banned from stores as of November 15
It's the rumour that refuses to go away.
Is Woolworths really set to ban Coles plastic shopping bags from all Woolies stores as of November 15?
That’s the rumour that’s been bubbling away on social media, causing a stir amongst Woolworths shoppers far and wide.
The whispers started after a website reported that the rule was set to be announced. ‘Please tell me this isn’t true,’ said one Facebook user. Added another: ‘What is this madness?!’
Well New Idea Food can report that it is indeed madness, with Woolworths confirming to us that the rumours are 100% untrue and that there is ‘no basis’ to the claims.
The Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that customers are welcome to bring any bags they like when shopping at Woolworths, so long as they’re clean and hygienic for our team to handle.
Phew! But while these rumours are incorrect, Woolworths recently confirmed another big change to their bag options - paper shopping bags. The supermarket giant recently responded to customers consumers’ cries for a more environmentally-friendly bag option by rolling out 20 cent reusable and recyclable paper bags.
A Woolworths spokesperson has confirmed to New Idea Food that the paper bags are a trial in some stores.
"We’re trialling paper bags in around 20 stores to test customer demand and will closely monitor feedback as we do."The vast majority of our customers bring their own bags to shop, but we know there are occasions when they forget or visit our stores unplanned.
"We continue to offer our Bag for Good and 15 cent reusable plastic bags to our customers in all our stores."
