Coles ask shoppers to pack their own bags amid coronavirus pandemic

New safety measures to protect staff

Coles supermarket has announced new safety measures to protect staff amid the coronavirus crisis.

Shoppers are asked to pack their own bags to minimise handling and contact.

The retail giant are also requesting that shoppers stop paying for groceries with cash, instead to use tap and go payments.

Shoppers are asked to use their trolleys as a guide for safe social distancing.

“A trolley is a very easy way of looking at a 1.5 metre separation while you’re in the store,” Coles Chief Operating Officer Matt Swindells said on Sunrise.

There are new cleaning and sanitisation practises in place. High contact areas such as trolleys, baskets, checkout areas and self-service screens will be cleaned regularly.

In a statement online they ask: “We ask all customers not to enter a store if they are unwell, to wash or sanitise their hands before entering stores, and to remind everyone to not touch their face unless your hands have been sanitised. The sanitisers we use at Coles have all been confirmed to kill coronavirus.”
