The mum who fell from a cliff top with her two-year-old daughter in her arms, made a heartbreaking last Facebook post months before what is suspected to be a murder-suicide.

The bodies of Tanja Ludwig, 33, and her daughter Tilly were found at the base of a cliff under Robertson Lookout at Mount Keira, near Wollongong, on Tuesday night.

In her final social media post in November last year, Tanja shared a post in a bid to help others with mental health problems. She ended her post with 'Its ok not to be ok. We all need support sometimes".

Detectives are are preparing a report on the deaths for the coroner.

Ms Ludwig - originally from Germany - and her partner had recently separated, and it's thought his family rushed to the scene of the incident just moments after it happened.

A relative told Daily Mail Australia his family was shaken to the core.

'Think about the person closest to you, and you found them at the bottom of a cliff... it's beyond horrible,' he said.

'Two beautiful human lives have been ripped away.'

EARLIER:

The bodies of a woman and her toddler have been recovered from the base of a popular tourist lookout. It is believed the mother took her daughter and jumped to their deaths in a tragic murder-suicide.

A painstaking and dangerous recovery operation took place overnight on Tuesday at the Robertson Lookout at Mt Keira near Wollongong.

"It's steep, it's hectic, we've got police coming in from the low side, police trekking down from the high side and the consideration of the helicopter," said Wollongong Police district commander Superintendent Chris Craner.

A visibly distressed man and woman were seen consoling each other at the scene, while another man, believed to be a relative, was comforted by paramedics.

Superintendant Craner extended his thoughts to the family and the emergency services working at the scene.

"It's going to be absolutely devastating for the community who don't know these people and hear this and what it's about," he said.

Detectives are currently preparing a report for the coroner.
