Sesame Street's new character has a mum with a substance addiction problem
Karli, a character in foster care, explains to young viewers that her mother is "going through a tough time."
Sesame Street is addressing the sensitive issue of addiction with its newest Muppet, Karli.
The 6-year-old character has been living with foster parents since May and has now revealed that she's staying with her 'for now' family as her mother is dealing with a substance abuse problem.
The storyline is part of the show’s online resource designed to provide parents and caregivers with ways to comfort children.
While some say the topic is inappropriate for kids, many experts support it as in the United States, there are nearly 6 million children under the age of 11 living with a parent who has a substance abuse problem.
