Police searching for the mother of a newborn baby found alive in a plastic bag in the woods in Georgia, US, earlier this month have released body camera video showing the moment they rescued the baby.

The crying infant still had her umbilical cord attached. Her cries were first heard by three young girls who were walking nearby.

At the time of her discovery, authorities called it “divine intervention” that the baby had been found when she was.

Baby India, as she has been named, is doing well and is in the care of the Georgia Department of Family and Children Services.

In the video released on Tuesday, a deputy rips open a plastic bag to reveal India, still covered in fluids.

The baby is then wrapped in cloth and given first aid by paramedics before being taken to a local hospital.

"Yeah, she's a sweetheart," a man said in the video as paramedics arrived.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office released the video of the deputies finding the little girl in the hope it would help lead to more clues about the baby's identity.

Sheriff Ron Freeman says he won't discuss potential criminal charges until detectives finish investigating.

Georgia has a law called Safe Haven, which allows a mother to leave her baby, up to 30 days old, with an employee of any medical facility including any hospital, fire or police station without fear of prosecution.

"Thirty-two years, this is the first one I’ve had of an abandoned child in this manner," Freeman said.

"We’re going to dedicate the resources it takes to be able to find who's responsible for this and why this happened."
