Kia Sorento and Carnival cars recalled due to fire risk.
Over 18,000 cars affected.
Popular family cars Kia Sorento and Kia Carnival have been recalled.
The recall is due to a defect in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), responsible for the Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System, can remain live even when the vehicle is switched off. If moisture enters the HECU, an electrical short circuit can occur.
Says Product Safety Australia: ‘If an electrical short circuit occurs, this could result in an engine compartment fire when the key is switched off. This could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants and other road users.’
Models BL Sorento years 2006 - 2009 and VQ Carnival years 2006 - 2010 are affected. Over 18,000 cars in total are impacted by the recall. Models were available for sale nationally from December 1 2005 through to December 31 2010.
Kia Australia have advised that parts are due to become available in July 2020 and until repairs have been made, consumers should park their vehicles outside away from structures and other vehicles.
Owners are urged to contact Kia Motors Australia dealer to arrange for inspection and repair of the vehicle.
