Tried and Tested: Xbox One S

Our 9-year-old gaming expert & reviewer, Maxwell, takes control and puts the Xbox One S to the test

Practical Parenting Parenting Reviews Editor / July 31 2018

As the mum to an avid computer and gaming whizz kid (aka, Maxwell, 9), I’m loathe to admit I know very little about the Xbox – or the difference between any of the consoles, or even how to use the controllers. I do know, however, Maxwell loves it. He’d play all day if I let him (which clearly I don’t, because too much of a good thing is never a good thing.). I also know that surely all of the time he invests in gaming will eventually lead to him inventing some kick-ass virtual reality game in the future, and he’ll naturally make a mozza, and then buy me an MG convertible and house on the Amalfi Coast. Well, here’s hoping. In the meantime, he’s starting his humble gaming career out by reviewing the Xbox One S. Here’s what he thinks...

The product: "The Xbox One S is …

... Awesome. All of my friends have one too, and we create groups and then play against each other in Fortnight on the server. It’s really fun. Unless someone raids your inventory – that’s not fun.”

"Hurry up and take the photo mum, I have to get back in the game...!"

Logistics: Explain to mums what it’s all about

“You can play lots of different games on it. Some allow four players at a time, so you can play against your family members, or work with them as a team within the game. Good family games are LEGO Ninjago and Minecraft. You can do lots of cool stuff in the games. For example, in Minecraft you can play mini games too, like Minecraft Hunger Games, Snowballing, Gliding, Shovels. I like it how their are different layers within the Minecraft mini games Shovel – the bottom layer is lava, and you have to try to get your opponents to fall into the lava.  We watch movies on it too, because it has Blu-ray. The picture quality is awesome – even on our old TV. You can buy games as DVDs and manually play them, or you can buy an online subscription and download the games and movies and watch or play them directly.”

What’s your favourite game to play on Xbox One S?

"Fortnite! I play this the most – with my friends from school and footy. You can do lots of awesome things in Fortnight, like rocket riding with friends, exploring different territories on the map, teaming up with players to battle other players, launching bazookas. My mates and I have headsets so we can talk to each other in the game. When you achieve a tier, you get a new avatar. You can also buy different avatars, graffiti tags and dances and moves. I have the Gentleman’s Dab and some different dances."

"Just a flying visit ... mum will make me get off in a minute!" One of the kick-ass female Fortnite avatars.

Mum says:

“Maxwell and his mates have been playing Fortnite in-rotation for a few weeks now. And I’ve been watching them! It’s rated 12+ (which I discovered after the fact) because it uses a server and anyone can request to join a game (they don’t have to accept them, of course). I always ensure that the kids he is playing are his age and he knows them. Admittedly, there is a lot of disturbing pick-axe action and shooting. On the plus side, there is also a lot of other benefits. I love that when they achieve a level they get a new avatar – often a kick-ass female. So Maxwell’s group of four mates playing are all girls in the game! I also love that Maxwell NEVER dances. But because the avatars all have these funny or cute or advanced dnce moves, Maxwell now recites these dances to me (at night when he is meant to be brushing his teeth and going to sleep)."

What’s been your most memorable experience with the Xbox One S?

"I sometimes take it to my dad’s house on weekends and we play together when my little brother and sisters go to sleep. He is really good!"

Maxwell and his step-brother, Daniel, were lucky enough to meet the brains behind Minecraft - Minecraft lords @vubui (COO) and @jeb_ (lead developer and creator of mega cool stuff including spiders 🕷 wolves 🐺 pistons etc).
