While pregnancy is absolutely a blessing, new mum Jess Bovey says she is fed up with the unrealistic portrayals of parenthood.
Bovey, who is pregnant with her second child, wishes women were more upfront about what pregnancy is really like.
"The first trimester took me by surprise," she wrote on her blog, New Mum Club, in a post titled The truth about pregnancy. She added, "I was tired, so f***ing tired – all of the time. In fact, I still am even in the second trimester.
"I am puffing and out of breath from walking up six stairs. I am so light-headed and dizzy ALL of the time, I would often need to just take a moment and sit.
"My boobs feel like they’ve been injected with quick setting concrete. Don’t even get me started on the excruciating back pain."
Bovey continued with a list of pregnancy side effects she wishes she was prepared for, from losing your dignity in the deliver room to not being able to see her vagina anymore.
Let's not forget the illusive pregnancy glow. "Glow? What glow? Yeah, that’s a combination of sweat and my new found oily skin," she writes.
Adding, "[I’m] a bawling mess one minute, completely irrational the next and then in fits of rage within seconds."
While the post might come across as negative, Bovey wants to make it clear that she doesn't hate being pregnancy. “I just have a problem with the way it is portrayed in the media and in the movies," she said.
And, "If you had the perfect pregnancy and enjoyed every moment, I envy you."
Many mums have praised Bovey for her honesty. "Oh, I am so happy to contribute here, because, damn, pregnancy can be just so awful," one mum wrote.
Another added: "Yes! Me + pregnancy just don’t gel well together at all! I got bad insomnia, the last trimester was the worst! I just didn’t sleep ‘and I love my sleep!"
