Mum devastated when tired nurse drops premmie baby on his head

Born early at just 29 weeks, Kayden progressed well, however his brother Keiran continued to suffer some lung problems and was transferred to a special care nursery while mum and dad took Kayden home.

‘I received a phone call at eight o'clock in the morning saying that the nurse had fallen asleep feeding him and woke up to him crying on the floor,’ Kelsey told The Intelligencer.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the accident apparently happened around 3 in the morning, meaning the hospital waited five hours to inform the parents of their baby’s injury.

‘My husband was losing his mind,’ she said.

‘You're supposed to be notified right away.

‘The nurse is not suspended; she has not been fired; there is no punishment for her.’

Tests later revealed that Keiran had suffered a depression fracture to his skull and an acute subdural haematoma - blood collecting between the skull and the brain.

Kelsey immediately demanded he be transferred to a different facility, where she says he is 'doing well' after a few rocky days but it could take 6 months or more for him to recover from the fall.

A spokesperson for Belleville General Hospital, where the accident occurred, said : ‘We are devastated and so sorry that this baby fell while in our care.’

They have not commented on whether the nurse will continue to work for them, but says she is ‘a very experienced, highly-qualified, great nurse.’

They’ve apologised directly to the Kellers and say that this is one highly unusual event in a history of great care at the facility.

‘We can't have people thinking that they'll automatically lose their jobs or be reprimanded for a human mistake.’

‘We certainly recognize and apologize for the anxiety and the stress this has added to the family.’

Kelsey says she found the apology frustrating and that she intends to sue, however this would require them to prove that the hospital was responsible for the accident.
