A young woman from Bangladesh was enjoying the early days of being a mum to her new baby when her world was turned upside down.

Arifa Sultana, aged 20, and her husband Sumon Biswas, had welcomed a premature baby on February 25.

She was settling into her new life when to her shock her waters broke a month later.

She was rushed to hospital on March 26 and gave birth to twin babies via c-section. Both babies – a boy and a girl – were perfectly healthy.

Doctors believe she had two wombs and managed to carry children to full term in both of them.

“She didn’t realise she was still pregnant with the twins. Her waters broke again 26 days after the first baby was born and she rushed to us,” Sheila Poddar, a gynaecologist who treated the woman, told the Tribune.

“I haven’t seen any case like this in my 30-year plus medical career,” Dilip Roy, chief government doctor in Jessore, said. He was concerned, however, that doctors at Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the babies were born, did not detect the second pregnancy.

Arifa has now gone home with all three children. She says she is happy with her three children but concerned about how she’d manage to bring them all up.

Her husband earns a small wage as a labourer, and she is worried about managing on “this little amount.”

However husband Sumon said the babies were a gift from Allah that all three babies were healthy and that he would do his best to keep them happy.
