A mum has died and her new-born baby is fighting for life after a suspected assault in Melbourne's north-west.
The 32-year-old woman fell from a car onto the road in residential Keilor Downs on Saturday about 1pm.
It's understood she and a 35-year-old man were having an argument in which police allege he threatened to assault her.
The incident continued in a car and the pregnant woman fell out while the car was rounding a corner.
She was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, eventually succumbing to them, but not before delivering a baby via emergency c-section.
The child, whose sex is unknown, remains in hospital in a critical condition.
A 35-year-old Keilor Downs man was assisting police with their inquiries and spent the night in custody, Victoria Police confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au.
It's believed the parties were known to each other.
Homicide detectives are investigating.
Charges are yet to be laid.
