September 24 2018

Alexandra Gardens in the heart of Melbourne will come alive on Sunday October 21stas thousands of young children and their families join the fight against childhood bullying.

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is launching its first annual family fun run, the Buddy Run. Kids, cousins, parents, grandparents and in fact, people of all ages will take off on a 1km run around the gardens before getting to enjoy loads of activities in the Event Village. The short course is perfect for all fitness levels and is even wheelchair and pram friendly!

It’s set to be a fun-filled day with children’s performers, lawn games, arts and crafts and so much more to keep the whole family entertained. While learning the importance of fundraising, kids will get to enjoy the afternoon making new friends and standing together to say NO to bullying.

Childhood bullying is something every parent worries about and a worthy cause to get behind. Sadly, in Australia, nearly 25% of students experience some form of bullying throughout their time at school.

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation has been working to ensure every child lives in a safe and supportive environment since 1997. Their great programs encouraging kindness and friendship between kids to prevent bullying are now in 1/3 of Australian schools and more than 75 per cent of all Australian public libraries.

Awareness and funds raised from the fun run will help support the foundation’s work to build safe, respectful and inclusive environments for kids and young children. It’s their goal to reduce the incidence of bullying, cyber-bullying and other cyber-related risks while advocating for the wellbeing of our kids.

Tickets are just $12.50 for kids aged 5-15 years and $15 for participants 16 years and over. The Event Village opens at Alexandra Gardens at 10am with the race beginning at 11am.

Gather your buddies and stand up to say NO to bullying by heading to the event website, https://www.buddyrun.org.au/, to purchase your tickets.

What is the Alannah & Madeline Foundation?

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is the leading national not-for-profit organisation working to protect children from the effects of violence and bullying.

It was set up by Walter Mikac in memory of his daughters, Alannah and Madeline, aged six and three, who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on April 28, 1996.

The Foundation cares for children who have experienced or witnessed serious violence. It works to reduce the incidence of bullying, cyber bullying and other cyber risks and it advocates for the safety and wellbeing of all children.
