A Melbourne chiropractor has come under fire after a video emerged of him performing a controversial spinal treatment on a newborn.

Dr Andrew Arnold from Cranbourne Family Chiropractic dangled the baby upside down during a treatment, then performed a series of controversial tests on the child, reports the Daily Mail.

The tests involved folding the baby’s legs, using a spring-loaded chiropractic device called an activator and tapping on the baby’s head.

The video was posted to the business' Facebook page but appears to have been removed.

During the treatment, the child is crying and is visibly distressed.

While the techniques Dr Arnold uses in the video are not illegal, whether or not they are effective is a divisive issue.

Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said she had written to the Chiropractic Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

“The Chiropractic Board of Australia must condemn this practice,” she said.

It's believed the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Chiropractic Board have kickstarted a confidential investigation into the matter, the Herald Sun reports.
